The FPSC MCQ test changes how you should prepare, mainly because wrong answers now cost marks. Prepare for the FPSC MCQ test the way you would for any timed exam: with practice, not hope. A few years ago, preparing for an FPSC job meant practising long answers and hoping your handwriting survived the examiner. That is over for most posts. From 21 September 2025, FPSC replaced descriptive written tests with multiple choice tests for general recruitment to BS-16 to BS-21 posts. The skills that win now are different: speed, accuracy and not falling for tricky options.

What FPSC has actually announced

The notice of 22 August 2025 is short, and these are the facts in it. Every paper carries 100 marks, and each wrong answer loses 0.25 marks.
| Grade | Post type | Papers | Pass mark per paper |
|---|---|---|---|
| BS-16 and 17 | All posts | 1 | 40% |
| BS-18 and 19 | Doctors, general management, professional or technical | 2 | 40% |
| BS-18 and 19 | Teaching posts | 2 | 50% |
| BS-20 and 21 | All posts | 2 | 50% |
What the notice does not tell you is the number of questions, the subjects or the time limit. That information comes from the syllabus and instructions for your specific post, so download the syllabus from the FPSC website first. The Express Tribune also covered the change. If you have not applied yet, start with our application guide.
Negative marking, with real numbers
Negative marking is the biggest change in the FPSC MCQ test, so it deserves some arithmetic. Run the numbers once and you will know how to approach every question in the FPSC MCQ test.
People either panic about negative marking or ignore it. Do neither. Say a question is worth 1 mark and has four options. Guess blindly and you get a mark one time in four and lose 0.25 three times in four, which averages out to a gain of about 0.06 marks. Basically nothing. But if you can cross out two options and guess between the other two, the average goes up to about 0.38 marks per question. So the rule is simple: never guess completely blind, and never leave a question just because you are not 100% sure.
This is only an illustration. Marks per question and the number of options can differ in your paper.

A six-week plan for the FPSC MCQ test
This is our own suggestion, not an official programme.
- Week 1. Get the syllabus for your post and split it into topics. Mark each one strong, medium or weak, honestly.
- Weeks 2 and 3. Attack the weak topics. Read from a standard textbook or your class notes, then do 20 to 30 MCQs on each topic to find out what you really remember.
- Week 4. Switch to mixed sets, because the real paper jumps from subject to subject.
- Week 5. Full timed papers, marked with the 0.25 penalty so the score is real.
- Week 6. Go back through your mistakes, revise key facts, and sleep.
How to practise so it sticks
Practice for the FPSC MCQ test should look like the real thing: timed, silent and scored. Keep a log of every FPSC MCQ test paper you attempt.
Keep a notebook of wrong answers: what you chose, why, and what the right reasoning was. Read it every week. It is more useful than doing another 200 questions. Read the whole question before the options, because many mistakes come from skipping a word like “not” or “except”. Cross out options you know are wrong before you choose. Do easy questions first and come back to the hard ones. And ignore anyone selling “leaked papers”. They are scams, and they will not pass you.

FPSC MCQ test day
Bring the same calm to the FPSC MCQ test that you built during practice.
The FPSC FAQ is clear about what you need: your original CNIC, the original treasury receipt, your downloaded admission certificate and a blue or black marker pen. Phones, books and purses are not allowed in the hall. Be there 30 minutes early, since nobody is let in after the paper starts, and remember that you can change your test centre online up to 30 days before the exam.
Common mistakes in the FPSC MCQ test
Studying from material written for the old descriptive papers. Reading without practising questions. Never sitting a timed paper before the real one. Paying anyone who promises marks.

Questions about the new system
These answers apply to the FPSC MCQ test as announced; check the latest notice before you rely on them. Check each detail of the FPSC MCQ test against the official notice.
Which jobs have MCQ-only tests now?
General recruitment posts from BS-16 to BS-21 advertised from 21 September 2025 (Consolidated Advertisement No. 04/2025). The CSS competitive exam is not part of the change.
How many papers will I sit?
One paper for BS-16 and 17, and two papers for BS-18 to BS-21. Each paper is 100 marks.
What is the pass mark?
40% per paper for most posts, and 50% per paper for teaching posts in BS-18 and 19 and for all posts in BS-20 and 21.
Is there negative marking?
Yes. The FPSC notice says 0.25 marks are deducted for each wrong answer.
How many questions are there, and how long is the paper?
The notice does not say. Read the instructions for your post and your admission certificate.
Should I guess?
Not blindly. If a question is worth 1 mark with four options, a blind guess gains almost nothing on average. If you can eliminate two options, it is worth taking. The actual marks per question and number of options can vary, so check your paper.
Where is the syllabus?
